Jean Paul Gaultier’s Atelier
Why did all those 1950s women flock to Daniel Day-Lewis’ atelier in the film Phantom Thread? It can’t have been for the clothes, his sense of humour, or the charms of his over-bearing sister. Perhaps the British are right, and misery deserves company? Or did the women only want to set poor, self-obsessed Dan on the road to happiness? If that was the case, all he needed was a Eurostar ticket to rue St Martin. Nobody does Anglo Saxon misery and self-loathing at the JPG HQ. They do hot-blooded Latin emotions instead. But mostly, they just do fun because they love what they are doing and are working for one of the great fashion geniuses who may be unpredictable but is never dull.
